I was born in Asheville, NC, in December 1981, and I grew up singing in choruses and choirs. In 2000, I joined the US Army Reserves and went to basic training and AIT that summer. After completing training, I began college at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. I picked up the guitar while in college; I learned by watching guitarists such as Dave Matthews, Damien Rice, and Eric Clapton. I had always been interested in music, but had never played an instrument. The guitar was a good fit and I never put it down.
In 2004, my unit was deployed for a year to Iraq. I asked my parents to ship me my guitar once I was in country. The deployment unsurprisingly gave me great inspiration for songwriting. The songs I wrote encompassed the many different emotions and experiences I had while serving in Iraq from February 2004 to February 2005. Then I returned to school to finish my degree. I had no interest in being called back to war, served my remaining time as a reservist and was honorably discharged in April of 2008.
Now I spend most of my time with my wife and working on my music. Regardless of ideological beliefs, I am passionate about my brothers and sisters in arms making it back to their own soil safely, not just physically, but mentally. This is something I hope to capture in my music and in my daily life.
